In each race there will be four shooting bouts and a penalty loop for each missed target.

Typical race-day schedule:

  • 8:00 to 9:00 am: Safety certification for those without the club certification USBA Redbook
  • 8:30 to 9:30 am: On-site check-in
  • 10:00 to 10:15 am: Equipment check, all competitors must go through equipment check
  • 10:15 to 11:00 am: Zero, rifle sight
  • 11:15 am: Race time, 30-second interval start

Trail Run Biathlon, 6K

The 6-kilometer (3.7 miles) trail running race format:

  1. 2K run: The timing starts with waves of 6 runners leaving every minute and running an approximately 2 km (1.2 mile) loop.
  2. Shooting, prone position: As you approach the shooting range at the end of the first running loop, you will run into the range, lie down in the prone position, pick up .22 caliber rifle, and place 5 shots at a 4.5-centimeter metal knock down target 30 meters away. For each missed target you are required to run a 100-meter penalty loop after the shooting stop.
  3. 2K run: After this first shooting stop, you run out of the range and run the same 2 km loop again.
  4. Shooting, standing position: When you reach the range the second time, you will place 5 shots at a 11.5-centimeter metal knock down target 30 meters away from the standing position and run the 100-meter penalty loop for each missed target.
  5. 2K run: Once you’ve completed shooting from the standing position, you run out of the range and run your final 2-km loop to the finish line.

Mountain Bike Biathlon, 15K

  1. 5K bike: The timing starts with waves of 6 bikers leaving every minute and running an approximately 5 km (3.1 mile) loop.
  2. Shooting, prone position: As you approach the shooting range at the end of the first running loop, you will run into the range, lie down in the prone position, pick up .22 caliber rifle, and place 5 shots at a 4.5-centimeter metal knock down target 30 meters away. For each missed target you are required to run a 400-meter penalty loop after the shooting stop.
  3. 5K bike: After this first shooting stop, you bike out of the range and race the same 5 km loop again.
  4. Shooting, standing position: When you reach the range the second time, you will place 5 shots at a 11.5-centimeter metal knock down target 30 meters away from the standing position and bike the 400-meter penalty loop for each missed target.
  5. 5K bike: Once you’ve completed shooting from the standing position, you bike out of the range and race your final 2-km loop to the finish line.
